Qualified Orofacial Myologist logo

As a general dentist for over 25 years, a consultant, and a professional speaker to the healthcare industry, Dr. Leslie has experienced the dental profession in almost every way. In treating hundreds of thousands of patients over her career and observing a serious health pandemic afflicting our population, Dr. Leslie, also a trained Orofacial Myologist and Certified Buteyko Breathing Instructor, is now dedicating the remaining years of her career to providing myofunctional therapy options to help children grow and develop their jaws and airways properly so they can breathe right and live better for a lifetime.

Dr. Leslie says, "today's societies are plagued by underdeveloped jaws, crooked teeth and restricted airways. More than 95% of Americans have deviations in dental alignment, meaning that the jaws have developed poorly leaving little room for the tongue and teeth. An estimated 30 million Americans have sleep apnea and 8 Million people in the United States use C-Pap machines while it is estimated that 33 million American adults could benefit from C-Pap use. History is showing that this is not genetic but a result of advanced agriculture producing softer processed foods and environmental pollutants that can lead to mouth breathing. The focus of almost all dentists and orthodontic practitioners today is on straightening crooked teeth. However, science and research has proven that early intervention and training of the oral muscles such as the lips, tongue and cheeks, can prevent underdeveloped jaws and airways thereby enhancing children’s ability to reach their full growth, breathing and living potential."

Upon digging deeper into the science behind this, studying the research, and finding that the symptoms of underdeveloped jaws are revealed very frequently as serious diseases such as sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) which are connected to obesity, heart disease, anxiety, depression, hyperactivity and even dementia, Dr. Leslie could not ignore the situation and made it her mission to develop a plan to provide children with early intervention myofunctional therapy using special medical grade, FDA approved appliances pair with activities in an easy and affordable manner that can help lessen or eliminate the possibility of a child experiencing these symptoms.

Since the maximum facial development happens by the age of 2 years and 60% of the facial growth is completed by the age of 6 years, Dr. Leslie provides her programs to children, from birth and up, in a child friendly environment at Myoway Centers for Kids. Dr. Leslie's dream is to see the MyoWay Centers for Kids programs available to all children in the United States to help eliminate the “small jaw” pandemic and hopefully curb disease in our society by preventing it at an early age. Programs are both available locally and virtually so the center can help as many children as possible. Dr. Leslie says "I know in my heart that our programs are a part of the solution to healthcare in our society, and because our children are the future, there is no better place to start."
